Welcome to the WordStar Users Group!

Rev. April 9, 2006

... WordStar basically invented the idea of "what you see is what you get" (WYSIWYG). It invented numerous features, including overlays, which later evolved into DLLs. It was the first product with dynamic pagination and even help levels, among other features. All modern word processors owe their existence to WordStar -- perhaps one of the greatest single software efforts in the history of computing. John C. Dvorak

If you were looking for the WordStar web page and Mailing List that was originally on Cuenet.com, you've come to the right place. We provide a number of resources for WordStar users, former WordStar users, and would-like-to-be WordStar users. Go to Downloads for free macros, drivers, clipart, and tutorials. Join the WordStar Users Group Mailing List for technical support. Subscribe now.

In 1996, Dr. David Rafky began the on-line WordStar Mailing List as an extension of the WordStar Users Group newsletter, The Scroll. The Scroll had been published for almost 16 years prior to that time. In 2003, Cuenet.com ceased operations as a mailing list server and the WordStar Users Group web page and Mailing List were relocated to WordStar2.com, where we are now.

Since then, we've given everything a new look, freshened the web links, and increased the number of free downloads. The WordStar Users Group Mailing List continues to function as the primary vehicle for providing WordStar technical support and tips.

There are separate Search functions for each area: Stories, Downloads, Links, Blogs, and the Announcements Forums. So, for example, if you're looking for a particular download and it's not obvious to you where it is located, search in the Downloads section to find out if we have it.

Have fun exploring. Thanks for visiting.

Greetings WordStar & GNU/Linux Users!

Rev. August 25, 2006

In case you're wondering what happened to WordStar & GNU/Linux, the content is being worked into this site. In particular, see Linux Stuff in the Wiki. In addition, there will be a large number of resources added to Links—External Resources as well as some Downloads.

There are quite a few WordStar users who have their WordStar operating under Linux these days as well as on pure DOS and Windows systems. It was very difficult making fine distinctions between what a Linux WordStar user would need to know versus similar issues affecting WordStar on other operating systems. It will take a while to get everything up here, but I believe it will be easier to search and find things—whatever operating system you're using.

The WordStar & GNU/Linux Mailing List is available for answering your comments and discussing your experiences using WordStar and Linux. Subscribe now.

WordStar: WS-DOS to HTML Converter: New Version
WordStar 3-7Andrew Stephenson writes: A new release of my PC-DOS (&c) app, WS2HTML, for WS-DOS to HTML4 conversion was uploaded to the Demon FTP site in early Feb (2007). The previous public version came out about 4 years earlier.
WordStar: Inset PIX Graphics Converter Now Available
WordStarFebruary 16, 2005
Updated March 1, 2005
By Ed Crenshaw.

I had an old technical report I had written using WordStar with PIX graphics for graphs and equations. When I tried to migrate this report to newer word processors (Open Office and Word), I found that the linked graphics files were not imported.

I looked for some available (free) translation program without any luck, so I decided to write one. This is the first version of pix2pcx.
WordStar: WordStar: A Writer's Word Processor
WordStar 3-7Written by Robert J. Sawyer

Many Science Fiction writers -- including myself, Roger MacBride Allen, Jeffrey A. Carver, Arthur C. Clarke, David Gerrold, Terence M. Green, James Gunn, Donald Kingsbury, Eric Kotani, Paul Levinson, George R. R. Martin, Vonda McIntyre, Jennifer Roberson, and Edo van Belkom -- continue to use WordStar for DOS as our writing tool of choice.

Still, most of us have endured years of mindless criticism of our decision, usually from WordPerfect users, and especially from WordPerfect users who have never tried anything but that program. I've used WordStar, WordPerfect, Word, MultiMate, Sprint, XyWrite, and just about every other MS-DOS and Windows word-processing package, and WordStar is by far my favorite choice for creative composition at the keyboard.

That's the key point: aiding creative composition. To understand how WordStar does that better than other programs, let me start with a little history.

Software for Sale: Buying WordStar
Software for SaleDiana writes:

There are no new releases of either WordStar for DOS or WordStar for Windows. The current owners, Riverdeep, a wholly American-owned offshoot of an Irish educational software company of the same name (not exactly the same name, but that part of it is), are maintaining a very abbreviated support page for WordStar for Windows on their retail software site (Broderbund), and nothing at all for WordStar for DOS.

On 4/24/07 we received new information regarding WordStar availability and have updated the links to the external resources accordingly.
